INTRODUCTION

Sublimity's internship program is a highly competitive program and many qualified people apply.  Because we rely heavily on our interns, we try to choose individuals who are hardworking, dependable, charismatic, motivated and, most importantly, eager to learn.  Past Sublimity Fire interns now work for agencies like the Portland Fire Bureau, Lake Oswego Fire Department, Forest Grove Fire Department, Springfield Fire & Life Safety, Keizer Fire District and Marion County Fire District #1.

The district recently made the switch from six authorized resident intern positions to three in an attempt to recruit/retain volunteers.  All intern positions are located at the main station (Station 51). The program is coordindated by the office administrator.

A resident intern is an individual who joined the fire district and has been granted residency at the station.  This person is a regular member of the Sublimity Firefighters Association and receives points for responses.  He/She will meet all the requirements of a volunteer firefighter.  Additionally, he/she will be assigned a 24-hour duty shift (24-on/48-off schedule) and will have regular duties that must be completed during his/her duty shift.

Resident interns are full-time students enrolled at Chemeketa Community College working toward a degree in fire science or paramedic.  Note: The fire district will only allow a student in the paramedic program if he/she has served the fire district as an intern for at least one year prior to entry in the paramedic program.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

• Enrolled as a full-time student at Chemeketa Community College--working toward a degree in fire suppression, fire prevention and/or paramedic.
• Possess a valid driver license.
• Be able to pass a physical, drug test and background screening.
• Candidates with EMT-Basic certification and who have already been accepted into the fire program are preferred.

BENEFITS OFFERED

• 1st completed college term as an intern: up to $420 tuition reimbursement; 2nd completed term: up to $670; 3rd completed term and all terms thereafter: up to $1000 *Note: to receive tuition reimbursement, interns must submit proof of charges and fees.  Interns will be reimbursed upon successful completion of the term.  Interns will not be reimbursed for classes in which they receive failing grades.
• Quarterly reimbursement for alarm response and drill attendance

• Living quarters: individual, dorm-style rooms, study area, computer and Internet access, big-screen TV with cable, fully-equipped kitchen, on-site laundry facilities, paid utilities
• Training and emergency response experience to add to your résumé 

OBLIGATION

• Pull a 24-hour shift every third day.  

• Perform all daily chores and other assigned tasks while on shift.
• Comply with all district rules, policies and SOGs.
• Attend weekly training sessions (Thursday night drill).
• Maintain a tobacco, drug and alcohol-free station/grounds.
• Represent the fire district and the community in a positive manner.
• Keep the station and living quarters clean.
• Pick up after yourself and, if necessary, your neighbors.
• Treat everyone with respect and courtesy.
