Duty Officers Duties

The primary purpose of a "Duty Officer" is to assure a Fire District point of contact is available for the community, neighboring districts/agencies and Dispatch.

Currently, Duty Officers are assigned duty weekends from 5 pm Friday to 6 am Monday.

A company captain the first Weekend of the month

B company captain the second Weekend of the month

C company captain the third Weekend of the month

Drift Creek captain company the forth Weekend of the month

If a fifth weekend occurs in a given month the Chief or Asst. Chief will be the Duty Officer that weekend

During the course of the shift, the duty officer should be aware of neighboring districts activities and the potential need for assistance/mutual aid. This way he/she can anticipate actions he may need to take.

Duty officers monitor south county fire frequency during waking hours so that dispatch can call them "on the air". If the duty officer needs to be off the radio due to an activity they are involved in, the Duty officer is to let dispatch know and advise them how to make contact, either by Alphapager or Alerting pager or a phone number.

Duty Officers generally remain within or close to the Sublimity Fire District boundaries during their shifts.

Numerous other events will occur on shifts and the duty officers will be expected to be available for contact. This might include illegal burns, cold fire investigations, various types of public assistance, as well as fires and medical emergencies.

Duty Officers may take command of alarms but are NOT required to. If an emergency responder became incident commander prior to the duty officers arrival and is competent and able to continue, the duty officer may opt report to command and act as a resource or be assigned by the IC. However, the duty officer needs to be alert to the need for moveups and coverage in Sublimity so that responders are available in the event of additional incident(s). If the Duty Officer opts to take command, it generally is done in person with a "Transfer of Command report" from the relieved incident commander.

REMEMBER............If in doubt....ask ..........

Is it the right thing to do ?

Is it mutually beneficial to both you and the District ?

Is it in the best interest of the public ?

If you can answer yes to these--then do it.

If you still can't decide....call the Chief.
